As the business owner on a typical day, you are asked to make a decision nearly every minute. All day long you are bombarded with questions from customers, employees, vendors, and bankers. It’s a non-stop barrage of seemingly endless decisions to be made.

• “Should we ship ground or expedite?”

• “Should we switch the line over now, or finish off this last lot of material first?”

• “Should we deliver to Customer A first, or Customer B?”

• “Do you open up more spots in our class or keep it capped?”

• “Customer C wants a refund, but they already opened the product. What should we do?”

• “When will your budget be ready to share?”

With these kinds of “in-the-moment” questions hitting so frequently, who can blame you for your tendency to avoid decisions on the non-mission critical stuff? It’s understandable that at some point you simply run out of gas, and do not want to make a decision for a few minutes, hours, sometimes stretching into months or years

The problem, in business, and in life is that no decision is still a decision.

This can apply to a lot of longer-term strategic decisions, but the biggest, most impactful decision of all, is often the one business owners avoid the longest: “How will you exit your business?”

Whether planning for the future of your business and retirement seems like it’s an eternity away, or feels imminent, you absolutely need to find time to think about this. Even if your identity is your business, and you don’t plan to walk away anytime soon, you are going to die someday. When you leave this earth, if you haven’t done so already, you’ll also depart from your business. Just as you plan to leave your family set up to carry on without you, it is important to prepare your business to ensure that your legacy, values, and name live on. If you fail to put together and implement an exit strategy, you not only jeopardize your legacy, but you may also leave your loved ones an epic mess to clean up.
